The first thing to do is to gather all the things you need for making the cover. You will need your pillow, a measuring tape to take measurements, and fabric for the cover. Also, grab some pins, a sewing machine, a pair of scissors, as well as a pencil and a ruler for marking the fabric.
To create your pillow cover, you shouldn't use just any fabric. You need to choose it carefully to maintain aesthetics and comfort. Therefore, the preferred fabric is cotton. It's soft, healthy, and easy to maintain.
As for patterns and colors, it depends on your taste. Choose the one that best matches your overall interior decoration.
After selecting the fabric, you need to measure the pillow. This will help you determine the amount of fabric required for the cover. To find out the length of the cover, take the length of the pillow, multiply it by 2, and then add 10 cm / 4". For the width, measure the width of the pillow and add 2 cm / 0.78".
For example, for a 45 x 45 cm / 17 x 17" pillow, you'll need a fabric of 100 x 47 cm / 18 - 39".
Once you've cut the necessary fabric, you should hem each side of the length. In this case, fold the edge inwards by 1 cm and sew it with a straight stitch. You can use pins to hold the folds in place and remove them after sewing the straight stitch.
The next step is to mark 2 points on the backside of the fabric. The first point should be located on the length of the pillow minus 5 cm / 1.96". The second point, on the other hand, should be on the length of the pillow starting from the first point.
Following the marked points, you'll need to fold the fabric. To do this, fold the shorter piece over the longer one.
During this step, you should sew the fabric along the entire length. Use a zigzag stitch for a durable seam. This also prevents the fabric from fraying.
After sewing, you should turn everything inside out through the opening. Make sure the corners come out nicely. You can use the end of a pen or pencil for this.
Finally, all you need to do is place the pillow inside the cover. Then, put your pillow on your sofa, armchair, or bed.
To have an aesthetically pleasing pillow cover, you must think about maintenance. Don't hesitate to clean it from time to time. To do this, you need to remove it and wash it. You can do this by hand or in the machine, depending on the fabric's quality. Make sure to use a mild detergent to avoid damaging it. Also, ensure it's completely dry before putting it back in place. You can also iron it to make it look presentable.
