How to choose a chair cover?

Here are a few criteria to consider when buying a chair cover.

Choose the right size

To do this, you need to measure your chair. How do you measure chairs to find the right cover? To find the right slipcover, you need to take two measurements:

  • Measure the height of the chair back, from the top of the chair legs to the top of the chair back.
  • Measure the width of the chair back, from side to side.

Choosing the right fabric

Covers can be made from Spandex, cotton, Jacquard or velvet - almost any fabric or blend. If you've determined that your furniture will get a lot of use, look for durable covers in thick cotton. If you're buying a cover to protect your furniture, it's also best to opt for a chair cover in gray, black, beige or duck blue. If you prefer a cover that fits like a second skin and looks elegant, try a thin cover made from a stretchy blend of cotton and spandex. This style of cover offers the most options in terms of look and texture, since fabrics such as faux suede and corduroy are available.

How do I clean a chair cover?

If your covers are washable, you can always choose to have them professionally cleaned, but you can also choose to do it yourself. Here's how to do it:

Remove them. Remove the cover to shake off any dust or crumbs before you start washing.

Treat the stains. If you have stains, treat them first with a mild stain remover or mild liquid detergent (pat the stain, don't rub). Do not use products containing oxygen or chlorine, unless your fabric is white and 100% cotton. If your covers are heavily soiled, use your washer's pre-soak cycle.

Load the washer. Covers are bulky and heavy, so use a washer without a central agitator (even if you have to go to the laundromat). Be careful not to overload your washing machine: divide this project into as many loads as necessary. It's also a good idea to run the washer through an empty cycle before putting the cover in. This ensures that there is no detergent, bleach or any other product that could damage your cover.

Wash it. Use the delicate cycle of your washing machine and wash the cover in cold water with a mild detergent.

Remove it immediately. As soon as the cycle is complete, remove the cover. If you leave it in the machine for more than 15-20 minutes, the fabric may be left with crease marks that are almost impossible to remove.

Dry it almost completely. Some covers can only be air-dried. If yours needs to be air-dried, hang it on a clothesline until it's partially dry (don't overlap the pieces, as this can lead to mildew), or dry it on the air-dry cycle.

If your cover can be put in the dryer, make sure it's big enough (small dryers can cause permanent wrinkling) and set it on medium heat. Take the cover out of the dryer before it dries completely (the seams should still be quite damp). Whether air-drying or tumble-drying, put your cover back on the frame while it's still damp.

Covers shrink a little when they dry completely, and you want this to happen once they're back on the frame. If you've accidentally let your cover dry out completely and it's shrunk to the point where you can't put it back on the frame, all is not lost. Simply put it back in the washing machine, re-wet it and repeat the drying process.

How do I change a chair cover?

  • To change a chair cover, start by removing everything from the chair.
  • Next, you need to remove the cover in place by removing it from the bottom and working your way up the backrest.
  • When it's completely removed, you can start by slipping on the new cover, starting at the top and pulling gently downwards.
  • You can then secure the cover with the elastic band at the back to hold it in place.
  • And that's it! That's all there is to it. Simply put the cover away or send it for cleaning.
